MPs call for cyber crime law reform
2 July 2004
A group of 21 MPs have proposed a series of reforms to UK cyber crime laws to take into account technological changes.
The All-Party Internet Group is demanding changes to the "outdated" Computer Misuse Act.
The report calls for increased jail terms for hackers and it wants firms to have the right to take out private prosecutions to tackle the cases the police do not see as a priority.
Although a welcome first step, the recommendations do not go far enough says Simon Janes, a former head of Scotland Yard's Computer Crime Unit and now operations director of computer forensic firm ibas.
He said that he was glad the APIG had acknowledged the need to criminalize the theft of data, but expressed concern that so many firms do not reporting cyber crimes.
"Around 93-95% of all cyber crimes go unreported because companies rate unwanted publicity as potentially more damaging than the incident itself," he said.
