Supermarket websites fail disabled

29 June 2004

Supermarket websites are failing customers with disabilities says AbilityNet.

The charity carried out test on supermarket websites to find out how accessible they were for users with disabilities such as dyslexia or physical impairment.

Sainsbury's, Asda, Somerfield and Morrisons all failed to provide basic levels of accessibility.

According to WhatPC the supermarkets denied the charges. Morrisons and Sainsbury's said they were addressing accessibility issues and Somerfield insisted all its sites comply "with the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Accessibility Initiative A standard."

Tesco's alternative access site, however, received praise from the charity ease of use.

"Tesco is actually winding it in to its normal site. This is good for the disabled as well because nobody wants to feel 'ghettoised'," said Robin Christopher of AbilityNet.

And he issued a warning to supermarkets saying companies whose sites are not accessible to disabled users could fall foul of the Disability Discrimination Act.
