Downloads chart announced
28 June 2004
The UK's first official downloads chart will be released at the beginning of September according to the Official Charts Company.
It will be drawn from the downloaded tunes bought from Napster, iTunes, Mycokemusic and others.
"The rapid growth of legal download music sites has shown the music industry that downloading is the future," an OCC statement said.
"It is reacting to a demand that hasn't been satisfied. It's going to give people a new window," it said.
The chart received an equally warm welcome from The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) chairman Jay Berman.
"The creation of the UK chart shows that legal, high quality and easy to use music download sites are a hit with consumers and look set to be a fast-growing part of the music buying experience in the future," he said.
The news of the chart comes after the launch of several legal UK downloads sites.
In the first week of opening, Apple's European iTunes stores reported sales of 800,00 songs with 450,000 of these tunes bought by UK customers.
