Blue-chip companies improving website accessibility
28 June 2004
A survey of the corporate websites of FTSE 100 companies has found many are showing signs of improving compliance with website accessibility legislation and guidelines.
It found that 37 per cent of blue-chip companies now meet minimum international web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG) compared to 11 per cent in the same survey last year.
According to Silicon.com, the report said: "It clearly demonstrates a trend towards accessibility in commercial web design and a recognition of the legal obligations placed upon corporate bodies".
Web design company Nomensa conducted the testing, considering conformance to WCAG, code validity, keyboard shortcuts, correct heading and page titles when ranking the companies.
Gallaher Brothers and Prudential came joint top followed by HBOS, Intercontinental Hotels Group and Rolls Royce.
Allied Domecq, BOC Group, WM Morrison, Whitbread and Wolseley all came at the bottom of the table and failed on all testing criteria.
Nomensa welcomed the improvements but said there was still a long way to go before true web accessibility can be said to have been achieved.
