South African search engine has become a global player
23 June 2004
South African-owned investment focused search engine, The Scannery, has become a global player attracting users from over 120 countries.
According to News24.com, The Scannery is an example of the specialised or narrow-band search that commentators have earmarked as a major area of growth in the search engine industry.
Developer Jos Pols attributes the global usage to The Scannery's coverage of 20 000 companies in 73 countries, and that the search engine tends to index company websites in more detail than other search engines.
"A majority of the users come from North American and European countries," Mr Pols said, adding that he was particularly pleased with the growth in usage out of Asian and Middle East countries.
While the majority of users came via Internet service providers, there has been growth in corporate usage including investment banks, legal firms, global corporations and financial journalists.
