Spam makes computers sick
23 June 2004
The superabundance of spam is making computers sick according to Yahoo commissioned research.
According to the study the average British PC has nine "sick days per year. Six of them lost through battling with spam and the remaining three are used to cope with viruses.
According to the BBC, about a third of the 2,500 people questioned by Yahoo would be prepared to make a drastic lifestyle change, such as exercising five times a week, if meant an end to spam.
Martino Corbelli, marketing director of web filtering firm SurfControl, thinks Internet and e-mail providers are not fulfilling their obligations to consumers.
"They never have done much about spam and all the indications are that they are lethargic about fighting the problem," he told BBC News Online.
The Yahoo survey estimates that spam is costing the UK economy £6.7 billion a year. It is estimated that around 14.5 billion spam messages are sent around the world each day.
