Macromedia launch platform to improve government accessibility

22 June 2004

Macromedia is hoping to cash in on the demand for improved web accessibility across the public sector with a business unit targeting government.

The company launched Macromedia Government with a launch at the House of Commons and claimed the product is dedicated to "enabling the public sector to create websites and rich Internet applications."

Although the internet continues to be an important potential tool for the government to reach the UK population a recent survey found e-government initiatives had difficulty succeeding because of perceived difficulty in locating the correct site or information.

In order to encourage more of the online population to seek out government services such as filling in tax returns online there has to be an improvement in the basic quality of public sector websites, said Steve Miller, European VP of Macromedia.

"There is more to the web experience than simply putting content online. Poor user experiences have driven citizens and workers away from government sites," he told Zdnet.

And he said that while for government the Internet is still an aspiration the new platform would assist in making it a reality.
