Yahoo expands search into China
22 June 2004
Yahoo has unveiled a dedicated search web site for China.
Yisou, translated as "No 1 search" was released yesterday, less than a week after Google made its maiden investment in China's biggest search engine.
"The introduction of Yisou will help extend our reach into the rapidly growing search market in China," David Lu, vice president of Yahoo North Asia, told Reuters.
Yahoo had previously expanded into China with the purchase of the domestic search firm 3721 Network Software.
Last week Google bought a minority stake in Baidu.com, which calls itself "China's top search engine."
It is expected that China's Internet market will grow to 111 million by the end of 2004, from 81 million a year ago.
