BT error on email storage upgrade
16 June 2004
BT's email upgrade did not go to plan as thousands of Yahoo! Mail customers received emails incorrectly telling them they had grossly exceeded their storage limits.
Around 10,000 BT Yahoo! broadband and narrowband customers received messages from the telco, telling them they had exceeded their mail quota by a "very large amount", and that their accounts had been "temporarily disabled from receiving new messages".
On Tuesday, BT Yahoo! announced that it was to increase storage for its web email users by 40 times to 2gb per account.
However, many customers emailed The Register, informing it that they had received emails telling them they were using 2.6gb of storage, and would have their accounts disabled.
One customer told the Register: "I don't think that their mailbox size upgrade went quite to plan - they're expecting us to ensure that we have -2GB of email in our mailboxes."
A BT spokesman admitted the email had been "sent in error", and that as soon as the mistake was spotted, an apology was sent out. According to BT, no accounts were disabled at any point.
