Microsoft and Google to battle it out over file-searching software
21 May 2004
Google is reported to be planning a new range of software for searching desktop computers' files and document text.
The New York Times newspaper has suggested that the company's plans would put Google into direct competition with Microsoft, which already provides similar functions as part of Windows.
Microsoft is believed to be revamping this part of Windows ahead of the launch of the latest version of the OS in 2006.
The New York Times claims, " By integrating more search functions into Windows, Microsoft could conceivably challenge Google the way it threatened, and destroyed, an earlier rival, Netscape, by incorporating Web browsing into the Windows 98 operating system."
