Amazon books affiliate program cause for concern
17 April 2004
Webmasters who run Amazon affiliate programs appear concerned with new terms being offered by Amazon.com.
Amazon.com provides two affilliate commission payment options, Classic and Tiered. Classic is similar to the previous scheme and Tiered asks the affiliate to do add more Amazon branding to thier sites.
The extra branding for Amazon under the Tiered scheme include a banner advertisment on the home page and branded advertisements for Amazons marketplace promotion elsewhere on the site.
Tiered payments are triggered when a Marketplace item is sold. Tiered and Classic revenues both start at 5% with Tiered payments rising higher than Classic should the affiliate choose to participate.
Affiliates argue that Amazon should not dictate whether or not a banner is placed on a site. It depends on the site design itself as to whether a banner will work.
Amazon also ask affiliates who want to sign up to the tiered option to include 'Marketplace' items. Affiliates argue that this could be against the topic of the site and that again this is down to the type of site and therefore an affiliate managers decision.
Affiliates seem to want the options, not for the options to be imposed.
