Amazon unveils search engine plans

Online retailer Amazon has announced that it has launched an experimental search engine
The new engine, created by Amazon subsidiary A9, integrates Google search results with other technologies that remember individual search histories and connect people to information about books for sale on the Amazon website.
Amazon intends to use the new search engine to increase its internet sales, but has refused to reveal what its long-term plans for A9 are. It is unclear whether the search engine will be a stand alone site or will be integrated into the Amazon website.
A9 was launched quietly as a Beta version and advanced features on the trial search site are currently accessed by signing in with a user name from the Amazon shop.
A9 allows standard web searches as well as results from searching the text inside books offered on Amazon. During a repeated search, the new search tool will automatically point out what has changed since the last time the user entered those particular keywords.
The book search results and the search history are contained in collapsible bars that can be expanded by clicking and dragging. Searches can also be limited just to products for sale on the Amazon site.
A9 offers users both a stand alone page and a downloadable toolbar, which includes a notepad to jot down notes about the sites visited.
