Overture launches paid mobile searches
31 March 2004
Overture has launched a new mobile travel directory in the UK in partnership with Vodafone and Orange.
Overture, owned by Yahoo, announced that the new service, a world first, would go live in the UK this spring.
The new service will see sponsored search links displayed on WAP portals Vodafone live! and Orange World.
The company plans to extend its mobile service, which is being launched in partnership with Mobile Commerce, to further operators and areas of Europe over the coming months.
Overture is also in the process of compiling a fuller paid service on mobiles, which it plans to launch during 2004.
Martin Child, MD, Overture Northern Europe said: "Initially we will deploy our successful commercial search model on text and location-based services, gradually moving on to more sophisticated applications allowing easy migration to 3G."
Travel advertisers on the Overture network will be able to place paid listings against specific keywords by purchasing Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) page adverts on the mobile phone operator's travel sites.
The travel sites will feature sponsored ads that users will be able to "click" to. Travel agent Lastminute.com has already signed up to the service.
