MSN plans to launch search engine this summer
26 March 2004
Microsoft will be launching its new MSN Search Engine by July of 2004, a company spokesman has announced.
MSN is also planning changes to the way their search results and paid sponsored links are shown on the search pages alongside the search engine launch.
Instead of including paid listings within search results, MSN said it will display paid listings separately at the top and to the right of search results generated by its search engine.
Microsoft has been developing its own search engine technology for more than a year, in a bid to compete with search giants such as Yahoo and Google.
Last year, Microsoft built what the software industry calls an "algorithmic crawler" - nicknamed a "spider" - to assemble a vast index of websites. The spider's work is now nearing completion and MSN Search's new format and search result presentation changes can be previewed at MSN Search Beta.
An MSN spokesman said the company was making steady progress and that July's launch will reflect results driven by a revamped search engine with better algorithms, the underlying logic involved in sifting through information.
