Google named top search engine for Europeans
17 March 2004
More than 55 million Europeans use Google as their search engine of choice, a new survey reveals.
Figures released by Nielsen/NetRatings show that, while most search engines enjoy only fleeting visits from web users, Google attracts users for more than ten minutes each month.
MSN search has an audience less than half that of Google, at 27 million, Yahoo attracts 12 million users, Google Image Search a further ten million and AOL search is the engine of choice for just five million Europeans.
Google is the largest search engine, with over six billion web pages and documents. The phrase 'to google' has even become a popular term to describe an internet search.
However, analysts believe the search giant may be seeing the effects of growing competition from companies such as Yahoo and MSN, who have recently started to focus more on search technologies.
"Google's dominance may appear unshakeable, but with some of the biggest brands on the internet developing rival search technologies, the next 18 months will prove crucial for this sector," Tom Ewing, European market analyst for Nielsen/NetRatings, told BBC News Online.
