Chinese search engines plan to challenge Google
11 March 2004
China's Internet search firms have reportedly announced that they are upgrading their technology in a bid to take on search giant Google.
Google unveiled its first foray into the $100 million Chinese search market in February with a Chinese language ad service.
China's three main search companies are Baidu.com, Yahoo subsidiary 3721.com and Zhongsou.com. All three firms are profitable and generate money via sponsored links, Reuters reports.
"My job in China is to kick Google's ass," Zhou Hongyi, founder and chief executive of 3721 Network Software Co Ltd, told an audience of fund managers. "China's market for Internet services and search has just started. If this is a marathon, we're only at the 1,000 metre mark."
The Chinese market has an estimated 80 million web users, but the government continues to restrict what its citizens can read online.
