Yahoo improves on local services
10 March 2004
Yahoo has launched a new feature that combines search technology with its mapping service.
The new tool will allow users to pinpoint the location of and find information on services in their local area.
The maps will display local services and attractions such as restaurants, hotels, hiking trails and cinemas, along with links to expanded information, including address and phone number, pricing, user ratings, website address and driving directions.
The tool, named SmartView, is Yahoo's latest weapon in its online battle with Google for search sector dominance.
SmartView pulls content from Yahoo's Yellow Pages, Movies or Travel sections, among others. Users can also search the web for further information on any of the places displayed on the map by clicking on the "Web Search" link in the information box.
Yahoo, which is removing Google technology from all of its sites, has been integrating content from its properties to offer more personalised and targeted searches.
In January Yahoo set up its own research lab to develop new ideas and algorithms and recently dropped Google searches from its website in favour of a new Yahoo search engine.
