Sophos anti-spam technique success still growing
24 February 2004
As the number of blocked spam sites increases each month by 18 per cent, an anti-spam technology by Sophos has proved to be a success in tackling spam.
Launched in February last year, the company's URL filtering technique works by targeting messages that include a link to a graphic promoting the spam marketing message rather than including it in the main text of an email.
With an increasing amount of spam messages (95 per cent) within the last year using a URL to advertise items, the filtering system has been a big success.
Sophos' PureMessage was the first filter list of detected emails and now includes blocked links to over 10,000 spam websites.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos said: 'One year after the technology was first introduced, the list of reviewed and blocked spammer websites continues to grow.
'Sophos' anti-spam labs use an analytical approach to avoid the 'poisoning' associated with automated systems, and the list of blocked spammer websites is growing at 18% per month.'
A new product has recently been launched by the firm, entitled Spammer Asset Tracking, which uses more innovative URL filtering to identify the source and destination locations of the spam activity. This then leads to a faster identification of the owner of the spam site and allows domains to be blocked in spam emails.
