Yahoo! dumps rival Google to go it alone
18 February 2004
Yahoo! has announced the launch of a brand new search engine - Yahoo Slurp - ending months of speculation.
Yahoo! has now dumped rival Google's index technology in its search results in favour of the new crawler based on Inktomi Slurp, purchased by Yahoo more than a year ago.
Yesterday, Yahoo dropped the Google index for about an hour, replacing it with Yahoo Slurp, before reinstating the Google-based system. However, today the company is rolling out the new engine permanently.
Phasing out Google will take several weeks, said Jeff Weiner, Yahoo's senior vice president of search and marketplace. Once the transition is complete, Yahoo expects its search engine to be far more comprehensive than it was while it was being fed by Google.
Google is now facing its first serious challenge from Yahoo!, and now MSN is also reportedly planning to launch its own search tools.
Google has just unveiled an even more powerful version of its leading search engine with the addition of one billion additional pages to its Web index, increasing its breadth by about one-third.
