US search marketing growth predicted to fall back
16 February 2004
US paid search advertising growth will fall to 22.5 per cent in 2004, after soaring by 123 per cent last year, a new report claims.
Research conducted by eMarketer predicts that advertising via paid search spending growth will exceed one-third of all online ad spending next year (35 per cent).
The Internet researcher expects search engine marketing growth to top $2.5 billion in 2004 and reach nearly $3 billion by the end of next year.
In 2002, paid search advertising reached $923 million, and rose to $2 billion last year, eMarketer expects the market to grow by $500 million this year and the same in 2005.
eMarketer senior analyst David Hallerman suggested that search sites and portals will need to target local advertisers in order to increase revenues in 2004.
The author of the Search Engine Marketing report said: 'The market potential for local search is enormous. As search engines find more ways to work with traditional yellow page providers, merging the success of online search with the personalized sales forces required to gain more local advertisers, the market will expand exponentially during the latter part of the decade.'
The report also forecast that further advertising growth would come from contextual searches and social networking search advertising.
