New internet code launched
12 February 2004
The war against internet porn was bolstered today with the release of a new code aimed at protecting children surfing on the net.
'Stay safe' is the message of BT's internet Green X Code, which is hoping to encourage kids to 'stop, think and stay safe' on the web. The code includes guidance for parents and teachers, with advice such as talking to children openly about the dangers of the internet.
'Just as stop, look & listen taught kids how to cross the road, stop, think, stay safe will help kids stay safe on the internet,' said Duncan Ingram, managing director BT Openworld.
'Were advising kids not to give out any personal details over the net and to talk openly about what they do and the people they chat to online.'
The BT code follows Barnardos' 'just one click' UK conference, dedicated to child victims of the internet and mobile phones.
'There have been a number of high-profile cases of sexual abusers using the internet to target children, but the level of awareness is still worryingly low,' said Tink Palmer, principal policy and practice officer at Barnardos.
'People simply cannot take the risk that it won't happen to their child,' she added
