New software searches internal network as well as Internet
9 February 2004
In a bid to be the Google of enterprise search systems, a Norwegian software developer has announced a new search application.
Fast Search & Transfer has launched the Enterprise Search Platform (ESP), said to be able to retrieve data from across an organisation's internal network as well as the Internet.
The product can collect information from intranet pages, emails, web pages and documents as well as unstructured data from corporate databases, according to Information World Review.
As well as this, the company claims the information can be retrieved quickly and analyse the content.
CEO at Fast, John Lervik, told Information World Review: 'We think ESP will be used strategically. The search engine window will move into a priority position on the desktop as it becomes increasingly important.
Bjorn Olstad, CTO at Fast, added: 'Enterprise-wide search is becoming a pivotal IT capability because it is the catalyst that transforms the volumes of data within enterprises into focused information.'
According to IT industry analysts IDC, 80 per cent of data handled by information professionals is unstructured, in the form of instant messaging, documents, emails, presentations and web pages.
At present, teams use separate search engines to find information stored across an organisation, such as portals, internal databases, intranets or the Internet.
