US to announce new system to warn of cyber attacks
28 January 2004
Fighting back against viruses and just two days after the MyDoom worm started to spread swiftly through users' inboxes, the US Department of Homeland Security is planning to announce details of a new cyberalert system.
According to CNET News, the system is said to mimic the colour-coded scheme that the government uses to warn citizens and alert law enforcement authorities of terrorism threats.
Spreading faster than any previous virus, security experts have warned that MyDoom emphasises the need for a system to alert and inform Internet users.
This new alert system could provide a common way for business and home users to report security issues and Internet threats.
The announcement which will be outlined by the division's director comes after officials and technology experts met to form plans in five areas - cybersecurity early warning, corporate governance and security, awareness for home users and small businesses, technical standards and building better security into software.
Director Amit Yoran will announce the National Cyber Alert System at a press conference in Washington early on Wednesday.
