MSN challenges Google as new toolbar is launched
27 January 2004
Microsoft's MSN has developed a new toolbar which users can download for free and includes a pop up blocker.
Hoping to take on Google, the toolbar reportedly looks almost identical to Google's and includes a search feature, which can perform web searches and links to MSN services like Hotmail and MSN messenger.
Users of the toolbar can also control pop up ads by adjusting the pop up blocker to control particular adverts.
Another feature is the highlight viewer that highlights search terms in pages that are retrieved after running a query from the search form.
Still on trial, the toolbar will be automatically updated by Microsoft after the original download takes place, meaning users do not have to keep downloading the toolbar each time something new is added.
Search toolbars are becoming increasingly popular, and have been used by a number of search engines in their bid to beat the rest.
