Yahoo! opens its own research labs
21 January 2004
In yet another move to secure its long term development, search engine Yahoo! has formed research labs to investigate and develop future Internet technologies.
The company formed Yahoo! Research Labs this week with a top priority on web search and related advertising.
Gary Flake, principal scientist for the group said: 'Our mission is to help Yahoo! pioneer the next wave of the online world through innovation, invention and scientific contribution.
'By partnering with technology resources both inside and outside of Yahoo!, we aim to cultivate knowledge and expertise, solve fundamental technology problems and translate theory into practice to help maximize the social and economic potential of the Internet for consumers and businesses.'
Similar moves within the industry are currently occurring with rival Google and Microsoft, with the main aim being to win visitor and advertiser loyalty.
The research labs idea originated from Yahoo!'s recent acquisition of Overture Services.
Mr Flake claimed that the lab was launched to focus on more long-term projects that take a holistic view of Yahoo!, its applications and the industry. For instance in terms of search the lab will focus on how to personalise the experience for people across the Yahoo! network.
The approach is in contrast to previous cases where Yahoo! employed engineers within different divisions to help develop innovations more quickly.
