BT launches new service 20 times faster than dial up
16 January 2004
A new high speed Internet service has been revealed by BT this week.
Twice as fast as standard broadband, the 1Mb service by BT Yahoo! Broadband and BT Broadband will be available from January 19.
Benefits available to browsers include faster download of large files such as digital photos, music and graphics, instant web browsing, higher quality audio and video streaming, and smoother online gaming.
About 75 per cent of existing customers will be able to use the service, which needs customers to live within just over two miles of a broadband enabled exchange, double that needed for standard broadband.
However existing customers will be able to upgrade for free and keep their current broadband modem.
To mark the launch, BT will be holding a range of price offers, including new customers able to save £70 from a free modem and free connection.
BT claim the new merchandise will appeal to 'all those who see broadband becoming a central part of their home entertainment set-up. It also takes BT one step nearer to achieving its target of 5m broadband connections by 2006'.
