Internet has big influence on US politics

More than a third of Americans have gone online to gain political information, according to a recent survey.

A total of 1,506 American adults were surveyed, 1,002 of which were already Internet users.

Conducted by the Pew Research Center for The People & The Press and the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 18 per cent of all net users have sent or received emails about candidate campaigns and 7 per cent have taken part in online campaign activities.

The survey also found lots of people had completed several political related net activities rather than just one and estimates a total of more than 40 million people being active political Internet users.

As is normally found in such surveys, the typical user tends to be male, although the average age of the users involved was found to be between 30 and 40.

More often nowadays, as the research shows, in events such as political campaigns, an increasing number of people turn to the Internet as a valuable, useful tool and ignore the more traditional sources.
