Game shuts down online gaming venture
8 January 2004
Retailer Game has conceded that the availability of free online games made its paid service unworkable.
Although the company only charged £2 a month, there was still not enough interest to warrant continuing the venture.
'We want to focus on the retail side rather than the online gaming side. Consumers aren't prepared to pay for online gaming,' Game spokesman Simon Soffe told newmediazero.com.
'There are other services out there for free. It wasn't possible to run as professional service as we'd like with the Game name attached.'
Game launched the Game.net multiplayer service, which included over 50 games, in early 2001, it had already warned in September that it was reviewing its service after the slow development of the online PC gaming market.
