Google to show books online

8 January 2004

Google is planning to launch a new service offering visitors the chance to view introduction and reviews of popular books online.

Called Google Print, the service was first launched as a trial in December 2003, where people had to type print.google.com and any desired term into the search engine.

Book publishers are supplying the content, but there is no mention yet as to whether whole books will be available.

Although the service is said to be similar to services offered by sites such as Amazon, Google argues it instead leads people to these sites rather than competes against them.

However, the idea could cause controversy as meta group analyst Tim Hickernell told NewsFactor: 'If they're getting the info from the publisher, is it really a valid reflection of the Internet, or will it become like a paid inclusion?'

Part of this evolution, Google has been expanding its service further with features such as a search by number service which provides shipping information, a glossary, calculator and toolbar which stops pop ups.
