Mars project earns record hits for Nasa
7 January 2004
Nasa experienced a record number of hits to its website at the weekend as the Spirit probe landed on Mars.
For the whole of 2003, the site had 2.8 billion hits and 287 million page views, yet this weekend, Nasa had more than half a billion hits in just 48 hours.
In order to host the sites that are covering the mission, Nasa is relying on 1,300 servers.
Excluding February, normally an average day for Nasa in 2003 would have been 867,000 page views and 8.3 million hits.
Internet Services Manager for Nasa, Brian Dunbar, told the Associated Press that 17 hours after landing the number of hits had nearly doubled.
Events such as this always attract extra attention to the site, other big hits were for occasions such as the attempted landing of the Mars Polar Lander, but the Spirit rover landing broke all previous Nasa records.
