Hacker targets e-voting firm
5 January 2004
A US firm providing electronic voting services has had its security breeched.
Computer Weekly has revealed that a hacker managed to access the corporate network of VoteHere and view internal documents.
The security breach happened in October but has only just been reported.
'Within 24 hours we identified who the individual was and where he lived and turned that info over to the FBI and cybercrime unit of the Secret Service,' said chief executive Jim Adler.
'Over the subsequent two months we've been collecting evidence, and that is, by and large, complete.'
As an investigation is underway into the lapse in security Mr Adler declined to give any details on the individual concerned or any specifics on what information could have been accessed.
It is also reported that Mr Adler is unclear as to whether the source code for any software had been copied but that it has been released to security researchers for review.
Mr Adler maintained that the incident did not affect the integrity of VoteHere's technology.
