Most influential web sites list released
31 December 2003
Friends Reunited, Easyjet and eBay are among the sites that have most dramatically changed how we use the Internet, according to online analysts Nielsen Netratings.
Also in Nielsen's list of the top ten most influential sites are Google, Amazon and Napster.
Tom Ewing, Nielsen Netratings analyst, told BBC News that the sites Nielsen picked had changed the way people saw and conceptualised the web.
Online shopping and price comparison web sites were a large component of the list, as were sites that allowed users to share files - such as Napster - or personal information - such as Friends Reunited.
'What the list suggests is that the vision of the net is as an interactive medium rather than a broadcast one,' said Mr Ewing. 'The rise of sites like Friends Reunited and Blogger also shows a rising confidence of people wanting to put themselves on the net and letting other people into their lives.'
However, Mr Ewing warned that concerns over child safety, viruses and hackers would push web users towards creating more private spaces on the web.
'People will want to create private spaces, in instant messaging programs for example, so that they can share areas,' he said.
