Broadband coverage expansion backed by DTI
29 December 2003
The Department of Trade and Industry has today announced it intends to boost the opportunity for gaining broadband availability in rural areas of the UK by opening up the 5.8Hz Band C spectrum.
The DTI confirmed it was looking to broaden its internet user base, from internet service providers and telcos through to the health and education sectors.
According to the department, the spectrum could be used to provide internet access to remote areas not covered by cable or digital subscriber line services, through a wireless broadband connection.
The authorisation to use this band will be managed by Ofcom from February 2nd, and the new media and telecoms regulator will accept license applications from January 5th.
Fees will initially be set at an annual rate of £1 per terminal, subject to a minimum annual charge of £50.
