Google follows Amazon on text search
18 December 2003
Google has thrown a challenge to online bookstore Amazon by launching trials of a text search service allowing users to look for book content online.
The search engine did not announce trials of the new service, called Google Print Beta when they were begun earlier this month, but confirmed details yesterday after users drew attention to new search results.
The facility allows internet users to browse the content of books and access content such as book reviews and information about the author. The search also directs them to websites where they can purchase the books.
'Google has been experimenting with a number of publishers to test their content online,' the company said.
'During this trial, publishers' content is hosted by Google and is ranked in our search results according to the same technology we use to evaluate Web sites.'
The move will put the website in direct competition with Amazon, which two months ago started 'Search Inside the Book', featuring content from 120,000 titles from 190 publishers.
