Microsoft to renew legal action on spam
18 December 2003
Microsoft is widely expected to bring further court cases against e-mail spammers after announcing it was 'co-operating' with state prosecutors.
The IT giant is to hold a joint press conference today with Eliot Spitzer, New York's attorney general, who made a name for himself earlier this year through a campaign of legal action against companies and individuals flooding corporate inboxes with spam.
Microsoft has also recently stepped up efforts to crack down on spam through legal action, and in June filed 15 lawsuits that it claimed targeted some of the world's biggest spammers, who together were responsible for sending up to two billion messages.
'I can confirm that the announcement will be about cooperation with the New York Attorney General on spam,' a spokesperson for Microsoft said today.
The company is mounting an offensive against spam on all fronts, using both legislation and technology to reduce a problem that is becoming increasingly costly for businesses and other e-mail users.
