BT trials radio broadband
17 December 2003
BT has launched trials of new radio technology, which it believes could play a key role in widening access to broadband Internet in rural areas.
The company has selected four regions in the countryside whose residents expressed interest in the scheme and will be able to access a high-speed, always on Internet connection through radio signals over a three-month test period.
According to BT, the technology could prove crucial in providing broadband to remote regions where using cable or a telephone exchange is not yet commercially viable.
Pierre Danon, the head of BT retail, said that the four communities would allow the company to assess the effectiveness of the scheme.
'Their experience could help BT and our partners to extend broadband and all its benefits to many more communities across the UK,' he said.
The telecoms giant is committed to achieving 100 per cent broadband coverage throughout the UK by 2005.
