Universal UK web access by 2008
16 December 2003
The government has upped the stakes in its technology campaign by pledging to bring the Internet to every home in the UK by 2008.
Speaking at the launch of UK Online's annual report yesterday, trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt committed the UK to one of the most ambitious Internet targets in Europe.
According to Ms Hewitt, a further goal must be added to the aim of providing Internet access to all those who want it by 2005, which the government is still determined to meet.
Ministers are now planning to create a 'Digital Inclusion Panel' bringing together experts from both the public and private sectors to drive progress.
'While it is great news that so many people have access to the Internet, we must continue to bridge the digital divide,' she said.
Currently only 50 per cent of British homes have an Internet connection, most of them dial-up.
