Security threat of Internet boom
16 December 2003
The rise of the Internet in the developing world is raising new questions about its future security, experts have warned.
Last week's UN summit on the world information society emphasised that the growing appetite for the web could improve skills and opportunities in many poorer countries.
But according to some technology specialists, the Internet will pose significant security challenges to developing countries that may lack the technical and legal expertise to combat viruses, hackers, and other threats, BBC Online reported.
Countries such as Brazil and China are seeing increasing numbers of computer attacks as enthusiasm for the Internet grows, and it may become even more difficult for them to prevent them in the future.
'If current trends persist, the internet will inevitably evolve into a chaotic formation, swamped with tons of different spam messages, myriads of viruses,' Garry Kondakov of Kaspersky Labs, a Russian anti-virus company, told BBC Online.
