Online shopping hits record levels
12 December 2003
Britain's Internet shoppers spent £1.17 billion last month, setting a new record for on-line buying, according to new figures.
According to IMRG, the trade body for the e-tail sector, the uplift in sales has been generated by early Christmas shopping from busy professionals who lack the necessary time to visit the high street.
The figure, which represents a 44 per cent increase on the equivalent month last year and a rise on the previous high of £1.11 billion recorded in October, is now sparking predictions of another record-breaking on-line Christmas.
'The people who use the Internet most are extremely time-pressured,' said James Roper, chief executive of IMRG.
'There are a lot of professional people sitting at their computers every day - so it is easy to find what they want and buy it.'
The sales growth experienced by the online community comes in stark contrast to the latest news from traditional high street retailers who have suffered a difficult autumn, with bad shopping weather and one-off events such as the rugby World Cup final combining to depress sales.
