Broadband expansion continues
10 December 2003
The number of UK homes and businesses with broadband internet access has passed the three million mark, according to Oftel.
Private homes and businesses are installing the 'always on' high-speed internet technology at a rate of more than 40,000 a week.
One in five homes in the country with internet access is now connected to broadband according to the watchdog, more than doubling in the past year.
Oftel's director general, David Edmonds, said broadband was experiencing a phenomenal rate of growth and changing people's reliance on the internet.
'Broadband is one of the fastest-growing new technologies in recent years', he said.
'It is transforming the way consumers and businesses use the internet, and is now becoming an important market in its own right.
'In the last five years the internet has moved from the margins to the mass market, with half of all UK households and two thirds of businesses now online.'
