Legal threat over e-privacy
8 December 2003
Nine EU countries face the possibility of legal action for failing to adopt new regulations designed to boost electronic privacy.
The European Commission explained that proceedings had been started against the states for missing the 31 October deadline for implementing the directive.
The legislation introduces stricter rules for protecting personal data as well as provisions for curtailing unsolicited e-mails.
'The e-Privacy Directive is a key element in the new regulatory framework for electronic communications,' commissioner for the information society, Erkki Liikanen, stated.
'I urge those member states that have not yet transposed this directive to complete the task with the minimum of further delay.'
Belgium, Germany, Greece, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Finland and Sweden all face the infringement proceedings.
