2002 UK Internet sales exceed £23 billion
5 December 2003
UK businesses sold £23.3 billion worth of services and goods online during 2002, official figures published by the Office of National Statistics have revealed.
It means that online sales for 2002 increased by more than a third on 2001 sales, with £6 billion worth of sales going direct to households.
The news reflects the growing confidence felt by consumers, who increasingly regard the internet as a safe and convenient domain in which to shop.
According to the report, online sales were dominated by the wholesale, retail, catering, travel and telecoms sectors.
The news follows a recent report suggesting that online consumers prefer to make purchases from websites associated with major high street brands.
