Anti-spam firms targeted by worm
4 December 2003
Anti-spam organisations are being targeted by a new internet worm, which aims to knock the firms offline with a bombardment of data.
According to the Financial Times, virus experts believe the W32/Mimail-L worm is the work of a spam e-mail peddler exacting revenge on groups attempting to combat junk e-mails.
Sophos, the anti-virus company, claims the programme details an erotic encounter with a woman called Wendy, and when an attachment is opened, the virus is activated and the worm is sent to other e-mail users.
The worm can also turn the affected computer into a 'zombie', which can be remotely directed to bombard targets with a denial-of-service attack.
The news follows recent legislation in the US attempting to contain the growing problem of spam on the internet.
