e-shoppoers put off by ID theft and spam
2 December 2003
Fears regarding identity theft, privacy and spam are dissuading people from shopping online this Christmas, according to new research.
Privacy organisation TRUSTe, which commissioned a poll of consumers, says that, despite predictions of a record performance in the e-commerce sector this year, money that could change hands online is staying in shop tills.
49 per cent of 1,2112 online consumers said they would limit their internet shopping because of fears over the misuse of personal information.
Over five per cent said they would not shop at all this year because of their security concerns.
Consumers' biggest fears were receiving unwanted spam after a purchase, identity theft and the potential for credit card information to be stolen.
TRUSTe executive director Fran Maier said, 'The internet was supposed to be the great equaliser, allowing small to compete with big.
'Yet this vision will never be realised as long as consumers are uncomfortable purchasing from e-tailers that don't put an emphasis on privacy.'
