Sex sells on search engines

2 December 2003

Search engines' move towards preventing the unlicensed selling of drugs on the internet has not been reflected in their attitude to sex sites.

American Online, for example, recently launched a service in association with Adult Search Fantasy Finder, which users specifying a sexually related area can elect to exploit in preference to AOL's main searching facility.

Adult Search Fantasy Finder pays AOL to receive the traffic from its search site.

AOL is not alone: Microsoft's MSN has a similar arrangement with NightSurf, run by Webpower, and Yahoo, despite a movement away from pornography in 2001, has revived its activities in that direction with the purchase of Overture.

Search engines, it seems, though responsive to pressure from the pharmaceutical industry and the threat of targeting by law enforcement agencies concerned to prevent the supply of unlicensed drugs in any way they can, are happy to make money from sex.
