.uk domain name 'thriving'

More than 150 UK web addresses are reportedly being registered every hour, as Britain's internet industry continues to grow.
Nominet, the .uk domain name registry, said that there are now more than 4.2 million registered .uk web addresses.
The company is in charge of the national database for all UK specific internet addresses and has welcomed the increasing number of individuals and businesses on the internet. The average number of .uk registrations is now averaging 110,000 per month, up from around 80,000 per month in 2004.
According to research conducted on behalf of Nominet, UK domain addresses are the first port of call for most Britons online and almost half of Britons (47 per cent) feel reassured by firms having a UK presence. More than a third (34 per cent) of those polled feel reassured by the fact that .uk websites are expected to adhere to UK trade laws.
Lesley Cowley, Nominet chief executive, said: "The UK Internet industry is experiencing substantial growth as witnessed by the increase in registrations of .uk Internet addresses. The combination of greater broadband take up and the established popularity of .uk domain names demonstrates that the UK Internet industry is more buoyant than ever."
However, the international .com domain, based in the US, still operated the majority of we addresses. Operator Verisign claims that .com represents almost half (47 per cent) of all registered domain names. Country specific domain names, such as .uk, .au and .de now account for 35 per cent of all web addresses.
