Google and Yahoo! row over who's biggest
17 August 2005
Internet search giant Google and Yahoo! have started a public argument over who has the biggest web index after Yahoo! announced it was the world's largest.
Yahoo! posted a statement on its website claiming that its has indexed 20 billion online documents and images, including 19.2 billion webpages.
"This is a great reason for more people to check us out," said Yahoo's vice-president of products, Eckart Walther. "We are more comprehensive than anyone else out there."
Google claims to have indexed a total of 8.2 billion webpages and has poured scorn on Yahoo!'s boast, stating: "We welcome innovation in search, but we have not been able to verify a substantial increase to Yahoo!'s web index via their search results."
Experts have also questioned Yahoo!'s announcement claiming it may not be possible to index so many webpages.
Yahoo! and Google are the two largest players in the increasingly competitive search sector. In the three months between April and June this year, Google handled 47 per cent of web searches, compared with Yahoo!'s 22 per cent, according to web analyst Nielsen.
