Companies to compete for .eu web addresses

16 August 2005

Firms across Europe are preparing for a battle over the right to .eu domain names.

The new Europe-wide suffix will go live next year after a four-month ‘sunrise’ period, during which firms will be able to register their interest in a particular address.

Companies with registered national and EU trademarks, public bodies and those with rights acquired by use, will have the exclusive right to apply for the domain name equivalent to their trademark during the sunrise period, The Times reports.

The .eu domain name is expected to boost online trade within the European Union and the EU has already appointed 200 registrars to manage the domain names.

However, trademarks can be registered in different sectors, so a food company and a building company in Europe could both have identical trademarks, making the process of securing a domain name more complicated.

The European Registry of Internet Domain Names EURid, charged with organising the .eu allocation process, is putting an arbitration and dispute resolution process in place. The Czech Arbitration Court has published its plans in English for implementing the .eu Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) scheme and is currently seeking feedback.

Companies are also concerned that if the process is not handled properly they will be forced to pay huge sums of money to cybersquatters to secure domain names.
