News Corp eyes up Blinkx
15 August 2005
News Corp is reported to be in negotiations to buy internet search company Blinkx.
The chairman and chief executive of the world's fourth-largest media giant, Rupert Murdoch, told the press last week that the company was planning to spend up to $2 billion on internet acquisitions to expand its empire online.
"We are in advanced negotiations to buy a controlling interest in what we think is a wonderful search engine,” Mr Murdoch stated. He added that the site had an "insignificant price” and said that internet expansion was News Corp’s top priority at present.
News Corp recently spent $580 million on Intermix Media, which owns MySpace.com, and $60 million for sports website owner Scout Media.
The Los Angeles Times quotes News Corp sources as saying that negotiations are underway for the acquisition of San Francisco-based Blinkx, a privately held internet search company. However, the insiders suggested that talks were not as advanced as Mr Murdoch had suggested and could still break down.
Blinkx would reportedly provide search capacity for the Fox portal and could provide media searches for movies, TV episodes and news clips.
