Google angry about CEO article

10 August 2005

Google is refusing to speak to online news service CNet News after it "googled" the company's CEO Eric Schmidt and included personal information about him in a report last month.

Elinor Mills, a journalist for CNet News.com, used information available through the Google website to create a profile of the chief executive.

Ms Mills included personal information about Mr Schmidt, including his home address, an estimate of his personal fortune and the fact that he had attended the Burning Man art festival. The facts were all discovered during a 30-minute Google search.

News.com, which owns the CNet technology news website claims that the article was written to highlight the potential threat to privacy posed by large internet companies.

Google has now blacklisted CNet reporters for a year, though News.com insists all the information included in the article is publicly available. The search giant has refused to comment on the issue.

The news website said: "Google representatives have instituted a policy of not talking with CNet News.com reporters until July 2006 in response to privacy issues."
